Know before you pour

Six questions to ask before anyone pours.

The details that decide whether concrete lasts through Illinois winters. A good contractor answers all six without hesitating.

01

Who's pulling the permit?

In Joliet, installing or replacing a driveway, apron, sidewalk, or patio needs a permit with a plat of survey, even at the same size and spot.

02

What's going under it?

Soft spots are dug out and replaced with compacted gravel or crushed rock, so the slab sits on an even base.

Our answer: Soft spots come out and compacted gravel goes in, on every job.

03

Where do the joints go?

On a 4 in. slab, control joints go about 10 ft apart and a quarter of the depth, so cracks form where they're planned.

Our answer: Planned before the pour, on every slab.

04

Who handles each stage?

Handoffs between crews are where schedules slip. Ask who excavates, forms, pours, and finishes.

Our answer: One crew does all four.

05

When can I drive on it?

At least a week of curing first. Skipping the cure can cost up to half the concrete's strength.

06

What can I put on it this winter?

No deicers in the first year, and never ammonium nitrate or ammonium sulfate.
